While the box was not opened, physicist Erwin Schrödinger argued that the cat was alive and dead at the same time. In the same way, until the data on unemployed and job seekers is broken down, it is possible to affirm that unemployment rises and falls at the same time. The labor market in Spain today embodies a phenomenon very similar to Schrödinger's cat paradox : the number of unemployed is decreasing, but at the same time it is increasing . Spain has been experiencing historic declines in the number of unemployed for 2 or 3 months . It happened in September, October and November, despite the crisis, and despite being traditionally bad months for employment. On the one hand, the Government defends "the resistance of the labor market in the face of a climate of uncertainty." On the other hand, the opposition is attacking him, accusing him of distorting the data. Given this scenario, it is normal to not be very clear about what is happening. Unemployment falls... Right? The summary is that unemployment is no longer what it was, literally.

As is often the case, there is some truth and some fallacy in both statements. In November, the number of unemployed fell by 33,512 people , leaving a total of 2.8 million unemployed. The figure is surprising as it is the lowest in a month of November since 2007, and the second largest drop in this month in the last decade (only surpassed by a 2021 altered by the post-pandemic Jamaica Mobile Number List recovery and the return to normality). Furthermore, the fact that unemployment has fallen more than ever in the midst of an inflationary storm and with the threat of an economic recession on the horizon is, to say the least, striking. The series has been broken The problem is that the changes introduced by the labor reform have altered the metrics, and the current unemployment data does not measure the same as in previous years , so it is not wise to continue with the historical comparison.

After the labor reform there has been a transfer from temporary to permanent-discontinuous . We are seeing a structural leap in the series, and what is now listed as unemployed cannot be compared with that of previous years," explains Javier Ferri , doctor in Economy and Fedea researcher. The labor reform has cut temporary contracts in the bud. Before, in highly seasonal periods such as summer, temporary contracts rained down. But when the summer ended, those contracts evaporated and employees went on unemployment. Even so, it is worth clarifying that the working condition of a permanent-discontinuous person during a period of inactivity is more stable than that of an unemployed person. "The drama of this type of hiring is that, instead of being used, it has always been faced with seasonal campaigns with disposable workers.
