Seven months after the total closure of their activity in Spain due to the outbreak of the pandemic, 40% of the hotels have not yet managed to reopen their doors and among those that have, more than 80% of the places they offer are They remain unoccupied, according to statistics from the INE, which will offer those for the end of the year on Monday.

Always according to their data, in 2019 an average of 14,818 establishments Phone Number List were open, which in the peak months of the summer season even exceeded 17,000. In the absence of data for December being published next Monday, between January and November of this year an average of 8,994 hotels have been open, 30.3% less than a year before.

There were months in 2020 in which the registration of open hotels was zero (April, in the midst of total confinement due to the first state of alarm). In the best of cases, in August, they have barely touched 13,000 openings.

Sharp drops in prices and profitability on the floor

Not even the efforts of hoteliers to lower prices, by an average of 17.4% last November, have managed to improve occupancy: from figures above 60% in the previous two years, in November they remained at a poor 15%. .7%.

And that strongly pulls down profitability, whose best measure is the average income per available room (RevPar in the jargon of the sector, for its definition in English), which has gone from being around 60 euros in 2018. and 2019 (somewhat higher in this second year) to drop to 13.7 euros last November, a 72.7% drop.

The sector cries out for a rescue plan

With these figures, the sector is preparing these days to launch an SOS to the Government, asking it to get more involved and design a rescue plan that will save not only the hotel infrastructure but also the significant volume of employment driven by tourism. nearly three million people directly.

The 2020 graph begins to languish in March, when there were already more than 3,000 hotels closed compared to that month of the previous year, but reaches its lowest point in April, with the first state of alarm and the prohibition of movements throughout the National territory. There, something never seen before happened: zero open hotels.

May, with the confinement still alive in the first fortnight of the month (the partial de-escalation began on the 11th), registered only 1,567 open establishments, compared to more than 16,100 a year before. At the beginning of summer, in June - on the 21st the state of alarm was lifted - it rose somewhat, with 5,896 active hotels, but still two-thirds below the figures for that month of 2019.

July and August reached 12,000 and 13,000 open centers (about 17,000 in those months of 2019), but in September the figure decreased again to just over 12,200 (4,500 less); October closes with an average of 10,600 and in November it drops to 8,189, about 5,000 less than in 2019 in both cases.

In terms of number of travelers, the figures are also disappointing: if in 2019 more than 108.5 million travelers passed through Spanish hotels, between January and November of this year, they remain at 32.9 million, making the year will close with around a third. The number of nights consumed has also fallen drastically, from 343 million in 2019 to just over 88 million in the first eleven months of 2020.

Balearic Islands, the most punished

In the most touristy autonomous communities, the number of closed hotels is also substantial: In the Balearic Islands, from 659 open on average in 2019, it has dropped to only 235, a 64.3% drop; followed by the Canary Islands, with 50.3% less (from 541 to 269). In Catalonia, the first recipient of international tourists in Spain, the hotels opened in 2019 were 2,310 on annual average while this year (in the absence of December data) they have remained at 1,252.

Andalusia registered a cut of 41%, from 2,463 to 1,452; and in the Valencian Community and Madrid they fell 34% in each case: from 1,030 to 676 in the first and from 1,077 to 704 in the second.
