It is the great opportunity that Mexico has to legislate in favor of better animal welfare standards for millions of chickens. To the more than 100 companies committed in Mexico to a policy of cage-free eggs, there are important voices from the United Kingdom that express the great opportunity that Mexico has to legislate in favor of better animal welfare standards in the production of egg. Mexico is the fourth largest egg producer in the world, providing one in every 27 eggs produced in the world. That is why Mark Williams, chief executive of the British Egg Industry Council, recently said: “While we do not anticipate significant imports of egg products from the majority of CPTPP member countries, there remain important exceptions such as Mexico, which "It is an important egg producer and we do not know that there is national legislation on the welfare of chickens.

Against this backdrop, the British Egg Industry Council has said it will hold the government to its commitment that animal welfare standards will not be lowered in any trade deal. “It would be morally wrong for egg products produced to lower animal welfare standards to be sold in the UK and this is something consumers will not accept.

We therefore want the Government to ensure that chicken welfare is not compromised and that the UK's high standards are protected in this or any future trade deal,” Williams said. This statement from the United Kingdom is very relevant since it shows the great challenge that Mexico has to meet the animal welfare expectations of large food producing companies, as well as countries that see it as a potential trade ally. It is time to legislate in favor of chickens, since more than 90% of them in Mexico live in cages without being able to express their natural behaviors and this is an increasingly important issue for society, companies and governments. If you want to receive more information on how to integrate these new trends into your supply chain and social responsibility and at the same time improve the life of the chickens.
