The modest origin of our biographer led him to seek a professional career in the Canary Islands Militias, first as a soldier attached to the Provisional Battalion of the Canary Islands, garrisoned in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, mobilized for seven years; then as a substitute soldier in the Provincial Battalion of La Laguna, for almost a year and a half; and,
