A week ago the electricity tax reduction was approved . Until the end of the year and as long as the wholesale price exceeds euros per MWh, VAT will be % instead of %. However, there is a group that is almost certainly excluded from this reduction: customers who have electric heating .

And the market has been pushing us to use fossil fuels for heating for years. The substitution of coal for diesel or gas has been overwhelming and the few that have opted for electric systems will be penalized by this reform .

Electric heating, the most expensive but the cleanest
Traditionally, coal boilers were used for heating in cities and reducing pollution was essential. In fact, the main reason was not the CO emissions, since at that time they were not so worrying, but rather the byproducts they emitted that made the cities have very dirty air .

An interesting alternative was the gasification of heating. Natural gas emits less waste and also less CO than coal. Where gasification could not be done, diesel was installed, also cleaner than coal .

Some opted for electricity, which is much more convenient than refilling a diesel tank, but was more expensive. And until not long ago, having electric heating was more polluting than, for exa  Bulgaria Email List   mple, gas heating , although it moved emissions from cities to less congested areas.

However, with the investment in renewables and the loss of weight of coal plants in the energy mix in Spain, electricity emits less CO than gas and diesel : about Kg / KWh compared to Kg / KWh of natural gas or Kg / Kwh.

It is true that this decline in the electrical grid is recent, in CO emissions were Kg/KWh, but the trend is downward and with the energy transition it will become increasingly so .

However, the VAT reduction harms electric heating systems
The problem is the small print (or perhaps not so small) of the VAT reduction. This only affects those who have contracted less than KW of power . And, unfortunately, to have electric heating, unless the home is very small, it is necessary to have more than KW contracted.

The increase in the price of electricity is not the only pro-environment measure that will harm low and medium incomes: this is what is to come

And what is worse, this decision to set KW as a barrier does not only affect electricity consumption during the winter, when the heating is turned on, but it affects all the electricity consumption carried out in said type of homes .

It is true that, in some specific cases, electric heating can be achieved with less than KW : the aforementioned in small homes, using heat pumps or aerothermal energy, or with electric accumulators programmed in phases, so that they are recharged during the night and without exceeding the maximum contracted power all at the same time.

Although it may seem counterintuitive, the fact that raw materials are rising is the explanation why renewable energy companies are falling on the stock market.

But the truth is that they are very extreme cases and, unfortunately, the vast majority of those who once opted for electric heating will not be compensated by the VAT reduction . Which is a great paradox because it is currently the heating system that emits the least CO, and the gap is going to widen in the future.
